April 7: Dr. Baker Presents! Dr. Baker introduced us to Old English riddles! These riddles - metaphoric and metamorphic - force the reader to think outside the box by seeing whatever object the riddle is describing as something completely different. This is done by sometimes humanizing the object. The flow of each riddle is smooth and rhythm is forever important. There are some examples below:
1. A moth ate words, A marvel to me when I found out their strange fate, that the worm swallowed some man's song and its stout structure. The stealing guest was not a whit the wiser for the words he guzzled. Answer: Click the Right Arrow on the picture ----------------------> 2. I am a wondrous thing, woman's delight, handy in the home; I harm no householder but him who hurts me. My stalk is tall, I stand in bed, my root rather hairy. The haughty girl, churl's gorgeous daughter, sometimes has courage to clasp me, rushes my redness, rapes my head, stows me in her stronghold. Straightaway the curly-locked lady who clamps me weeps at our wedding. Wet is her eye. Sigma Tau Delta wants to personally thank Kyleena Harper for so generously donating her wonderful presentation on publishing for our meeting (which you can download as a PDF here----->). WOW!). Along with eating birthday cupcakes, we commemorated Shakespeare's work by watching all of his plays - in one hour! How, do you ask? Via the Reduced Shakespeare Company! If you have never heard of these fantastic and creative people, then click the links to the right and watch their shortened versions of the playwright's works, while laughing you butt off! Enjoy...:) May 5: We celebrated Cinco de Mayo!!! It was a lovely, simple and relaxed meeting with homemade tamales (if you didn't go...they were yummy!) and watched a few small clips from youtube about the history of Cinco de Mayo - of which you can watch right here-------------------------> May 12: We had a BLAST(!) with Dr. Kraemer leading us through a creative writing workshop. Starting us off , we folded a piece of paper (hotdog style) and wrote (10) nouns on one side and (15) verbs pertaining to a job that you have specifically performed (cook, artist, Jamba Juice, Disneyland) that would help us to think about how nouns act differently. For example, if one of your nouns was dinosaur and you had been a cook, you could say that "Dinosaurs marinate in the earth". (Cool, huh?!) Next we folded another piece of paper into thirds and got into groups of (3). This time we would pass the paper around contributing to sentences and declarative statements that could sound very silly but could also be a form of inspiration to begin a story. For more instructions, download the Word Doc to the right and try it out for yourself. (They could make for some really great party games!) ----------------------------------------------> May 19: Elections!!!!! New Officers! Congrats to our new eboard for the 2011-2012 academic year! President: Lia Fulgaro Vice President: Jamie Bell Secretary: Rebecka Durflinger Treasurer: Andrea Edwards Historian: Katrina Corral Public Relations: Fernando Marquez Webmaster: Sheri Evans May 26: HAMLET!!! 3. I speak through my mouth with many voices, chant with modulations, change my notes frequently, cry, loudly, hold my melody, not hiding my song; old bard of evening, I bring men joy in their villages when with varying voice I cry; still in the towns they sit in silence. Say my name, who, like a jester, loudly imitates the minstrel's song, bidding mankind myriad welcomes with my voice. Answer: Click the Right Arrow on the picture ----------------------^
